Formulary Update

Your Prescription Benefit Manger (PBM), Express Scripts, has recently made changes to the Preferred Formulary. This may affect prescription drug benefits under your medical plan.

In 2008, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved generic versions of several medications. These generics are now readily available to consumers. Because of this availability, Express Scripts has removed the brand name products from the formulary and replaced them with the generic versions.

Using generic medications helps to reduce the costs of these prescription drugs while continuing to provide the same safe and effective medication therapy to patients.

Express Scripts recognizes that generic versions of some medications are not always immediately available following FDA approval. Litigation and manufacturing concerns as well as other issues can sometimes delay the availability of certain generic medications. When this occurs, brand name medications are not replaced by generic substitutions on the formulary until adequate marketplace supplies of generic versions are available.

Effective July 15, 2008, the following medications will be considered as non-formulary:

  • Wellbutrin XL (bupropion extended release)
  • Verelan PM (verapamil extended release)

Pharmacists may begin to substitute generic versions for brand name medications as soon as the FDA grants approval. Members who, by choice or at their physician's request, choose to receive the brand name medication instead of the available generic version may be subject to a higher plan co-payment or other out-of-pocket expenses. This will depend on your plan's benefits. You can review your benefits in your plan handbook or Summary Plan Description (SPD).

If you have any questions about your plan's prescription drug formulary or about generic medications, please contact Jodi Gibson, Rph., Clinical Pharmacist at SOUTH CENTRAL Preferred, by phone (717) 851-6749 or e-mail; jgibson@wellspan.org.
